Statement from Salina Robbins - August 4th, 2021

The following was written by Salina Robbins, known in MOVE as Lina Africa. Salina is the daughter of Whit Simms, the niece of Mike Africa Jr., and the granddaughter of Mike Africa Sr. and Debbie Africa.

It's a real shame to see how some people cling to fame and money, even at the risk of losing their own family. The public figures of the MOVE cult consistently ask what Beth, Maiga, and Kevin's agendas are but refuse to acknowledge their own agendas specifically. With all the allegations, why is it so difficult to stop pushing the agenda which stands with homophobia, sexual abuse, emotional abuse, physical abuse, death threats, the list goes on! If we acknowledge these facts and believe/support survivors, let's account for the entire picture and not just what fits their rhetoric. This moment isn't about the good aspects of MOVE that have been highlighted for so many decades; this moment is FINALLY about acknowledging the bad that was never broadcasted. WHY might public figures of the MOVE cult want to continue to push this narrative!? Could it be for 1.Fame 2.Money 3.Both? Is this what supports their lifestyle? Is it what gives them an identity that makes them feel important? Is this how they provide for themselves? I urge you to ask the question, "WHY?" Without letting them create diversions for you. 1978, 1985, and 2002 were all very real and tragic incidents, but in reality, it doesn't paint the complete picture of what is truly happening here.

Just because your life wasn't bad doesn't give you the right to invalidate someone else's pain and suffering. When you put cute labels on things like black liberation group, unity, political prisoners, revolutionary. I'd like to ask the question; WHAT IS THE REVOLUTION THAT MOVE CLAIMS TO BE WORKING TOWARD!? When have you ever seen or heard MOVE speak about anything other than 1978 or 1985? I was born and raised in the confines of the MOVE cult. There were never discussions about pushing different rhetorics like a raw diet, fighting for political prisoners outside of the MOVE 9/ Mumia, environmental awareness, or even human/animal rights. MOVE's work has always been about promoting MOVE, and claiming that they are working for the common good. This moment is for the individuals who are finally speaking up for themselves and have found the strength to finally realize that their life was not their own. This moment is dedicated to the ones that are fighting to regain their life.
