A Renewed Call for Truth: The Updated Leaving MOVE Group Statement

Today we're adding another former MOVE member, Rain Robbins, to the Leaving MOVE Group Statement. As I'm posting this statement for the fifth time (with additional signatures each time) I want to highlight a key point of the statement:

  • We’re also asking other current and former MOVE members to speak out about the real history of MOVE in order to protect June, Josh, Whit, Salina, Sara, Maria, Rain, and many others who have suffered as a result of being born into MOVE. We recognize that many MOVE members will be uncomfortable with inner circle knowledge being revealed publicly. However, continuing to promote the romanticized past of MOVE creates the conditions that allow for the ongoing suffering of many who were born into MOVE, as well as other victims of MOVE such as the Gilbride family.

  • We are calling on MOVE members of good conscience to begin to tell the truth about MOVE history, including the events that led up to the 1978 and 1985 confrontations, the treatment of children, and any information related to the harassment and/or murder of John Gilbride.

The abuse that's being revealed in MOVE did not start when Alberta Africa came home from prison in 1988. According to many within MOVE, these patterns of abuse and deception go back to the very beginning of MOVE. There are children who were born into MOVE who can no longer tell their own stories. There are also a number of suspicious deaths of MOVE members in the 1970s such as Ted Williamson (Ted Africa aka Beebop) and William Whitney Smith, who left MOVE and was a testifiying witness against MOVE in 1978. John Gilbride was murdered in 2002 at the fever pitch of a custody battle with MOVE. John was in MOVE for over a decade and was married to MOVE's leader, Alberta Africa. We are calling on anyone who has knowledge about these things to come forward and set the record straight. In order for there to be true healing, the truth of the past must be acknowledged and reconciled. This reconciliation will not be easy but is necessary in order to move forward with integrity.

Group Statement from Former MOVE Members and Supporters

Hello,

We are former MOVE members and supporters writing to address matters that are deeply concerning. We’ve all chosen to take part in the “Murder at Ryan’s Run” podcast to tell our stories and shine light on aspects of MOVE that have been obscured from journalistic scrutiny. We’re aware that for many who have supported MOVE this information will come as a shock. MOVE is good at controlling their own narrative and in gaining support from well-intentioned and kind-hearted people. We understand this and we ask that you take the time to understand what we, and others, are saying in this letter and will be heard saying on the podcast.

At the time of the release of this document June Stokes (known as Pixie Africa, daughter of Pam Africa) has left MOVE and is already in hiding with her kids. As you listen to the podcast and read the LEAVING MOVE blog (leavingmove2021.blogspot.com) you will understand why. We have reason to believe that as a result of speaking out, June's life is in imminent danger. The only thing that will protect her is for people to continue to monitor the situation and to spread the word.

Some of the things that will be addressed on the podcast are:

  • A pattern of child abuse that June, Josh, Whit, Sara, Salina, Maria, Rain, and many others have experienced, and that is consistent with patterns of abuse that have been ongoing throughout the near 50 years that MOVE has existed.

  • A consistent pattern of direct threats and intimidation against people who want to leave MOVE and tell the truth about their experiences. Some defectors have been threatened and there are many MOVE-related deaths or murders that are very suspicious, namely the 2002 murder of John Gilbride.

  • A myriad of financial crimes and other ways that MOVE has exploited the political support they receive in order to benefit MOVE’s leadership (not Pam and Ramona Africa, the real leaders of MOVE are Sue Africa (Sue Levino) and Alberta Africa (Alberta Wicker))

These issues are just a small portion of what is documented in the podcast. MOVE’s history is long and complex and it will take time to lay the groundwork for the realities of MOVE to be properly understood. We feel the need to address all of these issues publicly for a few reasons:

  • June has been trying to leave MOVE for many years, but without public awareness around her situation MOVE leadership will either take her children from her or kill her (they have threatened to do so many times).

  • MOVE has been getting very favorable news coverage lately that only serves to embolden MOVE leadership and allows them to continue their patterns of abuse.

  • Since the release of the HBO documentary “40 Years a Prisoner” Mike Africa Jr. has been working to rebrand a more marketable version of MOVE for his own personal gain. His portrayal of MOVE whitewashes the lived experience of children born into MOVE, and others, like John Gilbride, who was murdered during a custody battle with his ex-wife, Alberta Africa, the leader of MOVE.

The undersigned of this letter are asking for the following:

  • We are asking journalists to consider this information when reporting on MOVE and to dig more deeply into MOVE’s history.

It is also worth noting that all of the testimony that is being released on the podcast is already recorded and is safely being stored in multiple places so that it can be released to authorities should the need arise. If any of us end up missing, are hurt, or are killed it will not stop our recordings from being released, it will only expedite the exposure of the reality of MOVE. This may sound overdramatic but consider that many people were too fearful to speak on this podcast and Alberta Africa's ex-husband was murdered in 2002. After you hear our stories we believe that you will understand.

Sincerely,

June Stokes (Pixie Africa, daughter of Pam Africa)

Whit Sims (Whit Africa, daughter of Mike Africa Sr. and Debbie Africa, sister of Mike Africa Jr.)

Statement from June Stokes - August 8, 2021

 Let’s not forget mental health!

I knew that I couldn’t take the abuse within MOVE any longer. Breaking away mentally was the hardest thing I’ve ever done! With thoughts constantly swirling around in my head, confusing me, challenging what I knew to be true, challenging my own personal experiences of pain and abuse! Was this really the right thing? I know it was and I promised myself that even if it killed me I would get my children and myself free!

I wanted to write this to hopefully help people from the outside looking in understand how hard this is. I also wanted to let my family that are still struggling with this, know that I love you and I understand this is HARD!! Now just because this is hard and scary it doesn’t mean that it can’t be done. You breaking away from and exposing the truth about the bad doesn’t mean that you have to let go of the good that MOVE was supposed to stand for! With that being said how can we move forward without being honest with ourselves first and the world next? How we can ensure that we don’t fall into the same patterns and continue this monstrosity if we are not willing to expose all wrong? And not only the wrong of the government but also the wrong within MOVE!

For me it was heartbreaking. To come to the realization that “MOVE” is indeed a cult! This is not something that someone told me, but something that I came to while watching a show with my sister, that just happened to be about a cult. We were sitting there watching the show and all of a sudden it hit me and I felt like my life finally made sense. All of the pain and suffering that I didn’t understand suddenly hit me! This is why! It smacked me in the face the realization that this made sense, everything that I was seeing all of the characteristics of a cult. That was our life!!!

It is not something that wanted to see. It is not something that I came to without a great deal of pain, disappointment, disillusion, feeling lost, behind, angry, mad at myself for even coming to this conclusion. I stop myself from thinking about it for a while because who the fuck am I to challenge something so great a power so great? Challenge something so righteous and bigger than me?

How could my pain and the pain of my family within MOVE be more important than protecting John Africa and fighting against the system? To think critically of MOVE was to go against everything I’ve ever been taught. To think critically of MOVE must’ve meant that I was a system person. No better than a dirty cop or judge. A part of the very system that created the bomb that was dropped on the 13th.

A part of the reason so many children in the world are suffering, so many people are disillusioned, unhappy and hurt, the reason so many animals in the world are suffering. How could this be? Ria and Bert have warned me of this very thing and here I was thinking this way. I was disappointed in myself but I still couldn’t let it go. Looking at things through the lenses of MOVE'ss belief I was becoming a part of the “the system.” How could I go against my family and become a part of the motherfuckers that knocked my mother's teeth down her throat? How could I become a part of what my “family” has been fighting against? All of the beatings that MOVE people endured on the streets and in jail. The stands that they have taken. The sacrifices that the older MOVE members ( including my mother) have made to protect my generation and our children.

After all, we owe them everything for their sacrifices for us, right? They are the very reason that we are able to walk the streets without the cops beating us into miscarriages and putting us in jail and while throwing our kids into orphanages. Yes, I endured a great deal of pain within MOVE, but nothing compared to what I had been told I was facing leaving move. Nothing compared to the pain that the government has caused. After all, MOVE is righteous. How could I no longer want to be a part of such a great revolutionary family?

I WAS MAD AT MYSELF!
Shameful disappointed in me! I was supposed to be the next Pam Africa! What kind of person am I to let my mother down in this way after all that she has done sacrificed for this revolution? She had her head split! Teeth knocked down her throat, leg broken. What kind of person am I to let her down? What kind of person am I to let John Africa down and turn my back on God? What kind of mother would I be? Who would I be without MOVE? Was I really willing to take this leap and chance my children growing up and becoming drug addicts, prostitutes and even worst going to sleep and not ever waking up? Because that’s what I’ve always been told would happen along with a lot more. Just the thought of putting them in that kind of danger made me feel like someone is ripping my heart out of my chest the air feels thick and hard to breathe, I can’t imagine my life without children!

I could hear echoes of Bert and Ria’s voices in my head “your playing with some dangerous shit girl” “You don’t really love your kids” “ leaving move is a violation against Mama” Not to mention the threats “keep fucking around and you are going to end up like John Gilbride” “this girl is sick she needs to be cycled” and so on… and this what stuff I was told for going against them and here I am thinking against John Africa and challenging in the belief. I felt like I was going to be struck down by lightning right then and there. I wasn’t able to sleep. I watch my kids while they slept in fear that they wouldn’t wake up. I was terrified of them going around the windows are being upstairs by themselves. After all, I was violating in the worst way!

Yet I just couldn’t shake it! Yes, the Government is fucked up. But does that give MOVE the right to abuse us?
I was always told that MOVE was the only people in this whole world that had the true answers and solution to the world! Yet I’m looking around and I’m thinking about my life and all of the pain. I’m thinking about everyone else’s pain. I’m asking myself why is this isn’t adding up? How is it that all of these things are not supposed to exist within MOVE indeed does exist?

Why is it that throughout the history of MOVE, yes there have been good times... but there’s also been a more lot of pain, suffering, lies, deceit, mistrust, disillusion, mental abuse, sexual abuse, physical abuse, threats, so much that’s just unexplained and we just have to trust?? How could we all have access to the answers to the world, blessed to be so close to the source itself, and yet feel so damn lost! How is this possible?

I was scared because now that I’m realizing the truth doesn’t that means I have to do something about it, right?
But that went against everything that I have ever known, it went against my brainwashing and conditioning that myself and everyone else within THE MOVE CULT had been programmed to believe. It was not hard to come to the fact that Bert and Ria are fucked up! I mean It’s scary to think of how deliberately evil they are.
But to challenge my very belief system? That was a completely different thing.

I would talk myself out of it and start to focus on the good that MOVE is supposed to stand for. It seemed easier to just block it out. Try to get more involved in MOVE's work. Help to plan May 13 or August 8th. Something! I just needed it to stop! I would focus on the fact that in my eyes My mother is the truest definition of a strong revolutionary! And no thought could ever take that away. I’ve seen her stand up to anyone for what’s right! The work that she does is real and although Ria and Bert used the fact that she was so involved with the movement to keep her out of the know of a lot of abuse that I endured from them. They also used her absence to reinforce the fact that they had been telling me all of my life that she didn’t love me. Didn’t want me. In fact, she cared more for Mumia than her own children. It hurt and still does.

They used my father not being around much along with a lot of other things to prove the point that he also did not love me. They used other things to prove that my sister did not love me and of course, I was told that my “system family” was not to be trusted and full of pedophiles and people that did not have my best interest in mind and wanted to hurt me and would rape my children.

So I would focus on all of the bad that the government has done not only to MOVE but throughout the history of the world. After all, I am the daughter of a revolutionary so I can go down a list of all of the horrible things that this government has done. It was like playing ring around the rosie within my own head being! Being on a roller coaster ride that never fucking ended!! It was and is PAINFUL!

It just would not add up. Yes, the Government is wrong and needs to be stopped. But I and no one around me within MOVE was happy in fact it was the complete opposite. Something was very very wrong!
I would start to critically think again. I would start to put all of the bad things within MOVE together and realize that this is not right! Just because something says that it’s supposed to be a certain way, if it’s not really that way then how do you continue to protect it and be a part of it? How could I continue to do what I had been told and pretend like everything was OK and it really wasn’t?

How was it any different from anyone else that helped to cover up the truth about MOVE? Not in a sinister way but with hopes that things would actually be how they are supposed to be one day. I never understood why I had to pretend to be happy instead of actually being happy. I never understood why I couldn’t be myself. Why is it that if I am in pain or tired or hungry or anything like that I have to pretend to be strong because I am representing John Africa? Why my life was not my own but had to be completely dedicated to making him look good?

Think about your favorite charity and all of the good that you believe it does. Now imagine what if you found out that charity does not actually do what it’s supposed to? All of your hard-earned money that you are donating 90% doesn’t actually go to the starving children. Would you continue to support that charity?
Would the fact that it’s supposed to do good be enough for you?

Yes, the government must be held accountable. But you also must not turn a blind eye to the bad that the charity is doing just to focus on the little good that it does. To continue to show your support for that charity would be supporting the exploitation of those children and not actually helping them at all! It’s hard to realize that you have been hoodwinked! Lied to! Disillusioned! Used! Misused! You don’t stop fighting for those children's rights! You don’t stop fighting against the mentality that caused those children to be in that position.
But you also do not continue to support the charity exploiting those children just because they are supposed to stand for what’s right.

A lot of the people within that charity could be some of the best people you’ll ever meet in your life. People who truly want to do good with the best intentions that joined the charity for all of the right reasons and stayed within charity hoping that their continued work to actually do some real good, would outweigh the bad and eventually things will get better. But does that help those children? If you ask me those people would be better continuing to do the good away from that charity. The first step is to expose the charity for what it really is and by doing so revealing the fact that they don't stand for what that charity was supposed to stand for!

Now imagine being told you are a part of something so much bigger than yourself! Being blessed enough to be one of the few chosen ones with all of the answers. True happiness, freedom, equality, love, justice! And you have access to it all shouldn’t you be grateful? Even if things are not what they are supposed to be, it’s all because of “the system” imposing on the belief. Well, that’s what we were always told.

Your goal united as one to get rid of that evil that’s “the system” and things will be good like they were supposed to be! Just hold on and whatever you do. Do not leave MOVE because we are working towards our own utopia! It’s right around the corner! We could be there but you're what’s holding it back. So you are the cause of your own pain. You just have to stop resisting, stop holding on to “the system,” you are the very thing that’s holding us back. The very reason for the pain that you are feeling and you better not blame that on John Africa, our link to Mama. And the only way you keep that link is going through Bert and Ria because you need them to understand “MOVE Law" and get and keep that link.

Sends your head for a loop right? Because who would pass up on true happiness? What kind of person would you be? What kind of parent would you be? Remember there’s no in-between! No playing the fence! You are either with MOVE or against MOVE in their eyes. Therefore you are either part of the solution or the problem!
Who wants to be a part of the problem? Let’s be honest, who wants to go against MOVE? It’s scary, right?
I am asking these questions not for answers because I have found my own but I’m asking these questions in hopes that you ask yourself and think with your true self and not the brainwashing that has been put in us all, including supporters of MOVE.

Two wrongs do not make a right no matter how you spin it! You can continue to do the work, but first, the truth must be told! Being that MOVE is and always has been so public Yes this is a public matter and exposing it doesn’t mean you become a Government agent. It means that you stand for the truth and real justice!
Exposing the wrong doesn’t mean that you lose who you are, it means that you finally taking control of who you are! I am not trying to hurt anyone or get anyone hurt and I understand that this is painful and hard. But so is living a lie! So is being abused! So is not knowing who you are! With more and more of us coming out and telling our truth at this point it’s hard to deny that there’s something very wrong here.

But to fully accept the stuff and expose it means that you have to take responsibility and accountability and help to do something about it. That’s uncomfortable for people and some would rather not go there because of how they feel it will make them look. I am saying this because that’s how I felt myself! To admit that I am a victim made me feel week and re-victimized me in a way. Until I realized that telling my truth and exposing the wrong was the strongest thing that I could ever do!
So we can continue to let our minds get the best of us and think about how people will look at us for telling the truth OR realize that this is not our fault and although we have all done things that we are not proud of under the foot of that cult, and yes the older members should have done something long ago. I understand how hard it is to break away from that control and how it’s all mixed up into what the belief is supposed to be. I see the pain and hurt and I feel that as well. But now is this time! We are breaking generational curses we have paved the way our ancestors chose us to start the train now it’s time for us all to go on and fully break that control by exposing this shit for what it really is.

It’s time to heal and the only way to get that started is the truth! You are either part of the problem or part of the solution that is your choice. I am asking for Mental health support for all those who are brave enough to get away from that cult. Not judgment but real help. If you truly realize that MOVE is a cult then please understand that what we need including the older members and those trying to get away is understanding, love, and encouragement, and mental health support!

The leaders of MOVE are the ones that need to answer and pay for their intentional heinous crimes against us! From John Africa up to Bert and Ria. Members have been lied to and mistreated and there’s no amount of good that can explain that away!

I saved this from the first time I looked up the definition of a cult:
• Leaders are charismatic, have the ability to influence and manipulate others.
• Some form of abuse takes place within the cult (physical, sexual, etc.)
• The leaders of the cult control members’ choices, decisions, and lives through manipulation
and thought reform.
• Cult members are strongly encouraged to dissociate from those that left and which left
those that left feeling ostracized.
• Those who did question authority were subjected to humiliation, shaming, and abuse.
• People who leave cults end up experiencing: disassociated, experience an identity crisis,
PTSD, role confusion, guilt, and shame, and may need help reacclimating to the external
world.
• Individuals that are involved in cults experience isolation from friends, family, and the
outside world.
• It was reported that psychological well-being increased for members early in the joining of
the group. However, several studies have shown that increased amounts of psychological
distress were seen in those that were active participants of a cult.
• Members of the cult are victims of mind control.

Understanding this I now know that my parents and sister do love me just as much as I love them!
I now have understanding for things that I did not before for everyone that I still consider my family that happened to be from MOVE. Because the bonds are real and me leaving that cult and getting that understanding made me love them even more without the interference of the evil.

With love, understanding, and strength!
June aka Pixie Africa

Ps. I no longer go by the name Pixie. Part of finding myself was getting away from that image and pain of Pixie. I am June.

Now I Can Breathe: A Statement by Rain Robbins (formerly Rain Africa)

Rain Robbins was born into MOVE as Rain Africa. She was a third-generation MOVE member from the line of Mo and Mary Africa.

Let me ask you a question….

Have you ever had a conversation with God? I know people who have. I know people who stood on trial with him. He was god and Jesus all in one. The only being in this human form to truly know the will of Momma (Mother Nature and the universe). Have you ever been so close to divinity that sitting in a house in West Philadelphia reading “Guidelines” to a group of your peers rivaled listening to the Pope lead prayer in Rome’s most beautiful cathedral? Have you ever held the last true remnants of the real gospel in your hands? Words so powerful they’d bring the world to its feet? ….I have. Have you ever sat at your elders' feet and listened to them recount the moment they'd seen the light? They were at the brink of death fighting seen and unseen demons and then they were saved. Have you ever thought “If I worked as hard as them maybe I’d find peace in my mind?!” I was told to be fortunate to have been born into the chosen group. God’s favorites.

Now, what if that was a lie? What if the purest people washed clean of humanity’s sins or “violations,” the same people who raised you turned out to be the reason you wanted to die? The reason you never had a chance to breathe your first breath to begin with?

Life hit me like a bucket of cold water at 17. I was unhappy and adulthood was coming towards me fast.

For so long I was two different people: Rain Africa and Rain Robbins. Rain Africa was determined, strong, and outspoken. She had the body built for bearing children into the revolution (something that Sue AKA “Ria” Africa told me often growing up) and a way with words that if refined would rival Mumia Abu Jamal (something often affirmed by older members of MOVE when I was asked to write speeches that were finely combed over by those same people). She wasn’t afraid to face a crowd of people and she wouldn’t dare show a flaw in front of outsiders. I identify her much the same as the story of young David and Goliath in the Bible. She wielded the teaching of John Africa like a sword and MOVE was both her protection blessed by God and Israel for which she’d give her life for… Israel draws most comparison to the fact that it was run by an unfit ruler something she often whispered to her peers. She could be described much like David, “skillful in playing, a man of valor, a warrior, prudent in speech, and a man of good presence; and the Lord is with him."

Unfortunately for Alberta and Sue, the lord almighty wasn’t with me. Instead, it was the drive to soothe my growing discomfort with the life I was living. There was no way I’d ever be content with another person’s idea of the woman I should be.

Rain Robbins on the other hand was multifaceted, to say the least. She was a high school student and an athlete. She was damn near mute outside of her “Family.” Kept her head in some type of book and her feet in ballet shoes. She craved knowledge of the world and loved finding herself immersed in the pages of those books. She loved One Direction and Paramore. She was a huge feminist, which was only trouble in her male-dominant age group (Note: MOVE kids are lumped into peer groups by Alberta as many times the women would be pregnant at the same time and produced batches of kids rapidly.). She was often depressed and sick suffering from what I now know is a severe case of endometriosis. She had friends. She loved any form of individualism and art. She loved fashion and makeup to the discomfort of other people in the organization for it was systematic and vain. She and her mother were often at odds in blowout arguments that sparked many “Meetings” that attacked the very core of their relationship with MOVE doctrine. This allowed for parental alienation when she would go to Sue and Alberta about these issues. She cried at the drop of a dime and had a wild temper, something that was unacceptable in MOVE. Too many flaws… Too much personality and individuality. She was too “Systematic.”

She kept her life in the cult closely guarded and separate from her tiny window to the outside world, because at any point she was either gonna have to relinquish it all to be the perfect MOVE wife and mother to the young man she was manipulated into being with or continue her education (an education her mother fought Alberta and Sue on years earlier to receive and was ostracized harshly for having) in order to serve the organization in the same ways her Aunt Pam and Aunt Ramona had. Nothing in her life was just for her, everything was to serve MOVE’s mission. She would no longer have the little autonomy she cherished and the dreams she dreamt would have to be tucked away for the greater good of the world.

It seems like the age-long question of duty over passion, doesn’t it? Everyone has that point where they have to choose between the life their parents want and the one they choose, right? Unfortunately for those in MOVE the choice is too often framed as life or death. MOVE’s way or The System. If I followed my own conscience I’d surely die in the system, but if I stayed in MOVE I’d be utterly unhappy. All I knew was that no matter what I’d have to be happy. I wouldn’t survive 17 more years unhappy. I’d have to carve a place for myself that invited love and not pain. Thankfully for me, the choice was made for me.

It started late one November evening in 2017, my maternal system grandmother had been diagnosed with stage 4 cancer. She had mere months to live. At this point, I’d been juggling dance training, my impending graduation from the cyber school, and a year-old relationship with a young man in MOVE that I’d most likely marry within a few years. Instead of finding the support from many of my “family” that you’d expect from such a “love” driven cult, I found nothing but scrutiny and hypocrisy. I, like so often before in my life, had been villainized for not giving enough into the cult, yet I emotionally had no more of me to give as I helped my parents care for my grandmother in her last days. I was crumbling and no one could see. Could I blame them? We were never taught to understand and articulate such complex emotions. We would be seen as weak if we tried. I was told by Alberta on the same day of her passing how weak and selfish I was for mourning her.  A woman who tried so hard to save her daughter and grandchildren from MOVE would never see the moment I checked out. I began to board up this big heart of mine to MOVE people and learn to let others in. I found comfort in the people I was told to mistrust. My grandmother would never see me flourish in the way she’d always hoped and I can only hope she’s proud of the young woman I am today. I carry her compassion with me always.

It’s weird to think how my mentality snowballed so fast. I was never a dumb person, just blind and naïve to the world. I so desperately wish it was a light bulb moment, but the teachings slowly stopped adding up and the pedestals I held people on fell like Atlantis sinking to the bottom of the ocean. I learned that becoming an adult meant putting these childish notations of fighting Goliath away. This led me into a deep depression that had me not only attempt suicide but crave death. That was the beginning of my mental departure from the grasps of MOVE and over the past 5 or so years I’ve come to have many long nights of reflection, hard conversations, and anxiety attacks over the truth about how I was raised and the abuse I suffered. Trauma is trauma and I can no longer be gaslit into a narcissist’s daydream instead of my own truth. Growing pains never hurt as bad as learning to trust a world you were taught to fear.

Like most 21-year-olds I’m still trying to find out the person I am and who I want to be. I’ve slowly but surely distanced myself from the leaders of the cult and many active members over the past few years allowing myself to actually breathe in a way I never have before. I’ve learned I find myself no longer relating to Rain Africa in the same way I did before because that wasn’t me. That was a character and I was just the actress cast in that role.

As time goes on I hope to share more of my time in MOVE and find as much closure as humanly possible. I can only express my own experiences and live my own truth. My childhood feels bittersweet, but mostly bitter nowadays. There are things that happened that shouldn’t have. I still have so much love for many people engulfed in that life and I love my parents with every bone in my body… they all raised me the only way they knew how, but I want to shake the feelings of hopelessness. For so long I craved the unity promised in MOVE, but I learned that I have to gain unity in my own soul first to ever be content in life. So long as my identity is split and edited as much as it was growing up I’ll never find rest in this lifetime.

Maybe now I can not only breathe, but sigh a sigh of relief. I am just me… Rain. Finally.

MOVE's Guidelines on Homosexuality

Yesterday's episode of Murder at Ryan's Run went into some detail about MOVE's position on homosexuality, detailed extreme homophobia that is often hidden from the public, and mentioned a section of Guidelines (MOVE's scriptures) on homosexuality. Those pages of Guidelines were posted on the Murder at Ryan's Run Instagram account and I have also posted them below. The first three pages of Guidelines have been copied many times and, as a result, are difficult to read. The last page is very clear, and there are sections of the first three pages that are also easy to read. In the near future, I'll type out some key quotes from these sections for a more detailed analysis. Today I want to frame these sections of Guidelines a bit, explain why I think they should be posted at all, and leave them here for anyone interested to read.

There are a few things that are helpful to understand before reading through these documents. The first is that within MOVE everything that John Africa ever said is considered Guidelines. If he said it and it was written down then it is included amongst thousands of pages of MOVE's scriptures. These are not stored in a book, but consist of many thousands of pages, like the ones below, which are stored in filing cabinets and boxes and are dispersed among current members, and many who have left MOVE but held on to these documents. In the early '70s there was a collection of Guidelines called The Book, but from that time until the bombing on Osage Ave. the page count grew by the day.

Within MOVE all of the Guidelines are absolute truth. You cannot question the Guidelines. To question the Guidelines would be to question John Africa, which would be to question God, which would be to question life itself, which would be suicidal. That last sentence is not my own creation but is straight MOVE doctrine.

The other thing that needs to be understood is that a very small percentage of the Guidelines are shown to outsiders. The Guidelines shown to outsiders are of a very different tone than those that MOVE members see. Some of the Guidelines given to outsiders are quite beautiful and have a system of logic and use of language that's worth some exploration. Guidelines are even heavily guarded amongst members and there are many sections of Guidelines that only MOVE's leadership has access to. The sections below would never be made publicly available.

I have to admit that there is part of me that feels a bit uncomfortable with posting these publicly. In some ways, it feels like a cheap shot because these are such alienating documents and I'm not presenting them within the large context of MOVE writings that may make them a bit more understandable. However, it still seems that it's worth posting these for a few reasons which I'll outline below. I also plan to post other sections of Guidelines in the future, and hopefully, my commentaries on those will provide more context for these.

One reason it seems important to post these documents is that young people in MOVE have grown up with these teachings about homosexuality and it has caused great psychological harm. The fact that MOVE publicly works alongside LGBTQ groups while privately teaching such extreme homophobia has been too much to bear for some of the young people who have struggled to come out.

The way that MOVE presents their position on homosexuality publicly is misleading. If I had seen this section of Guidelines when I was becoming interested in MOVE at the age of 14 I never would have become as close as I did. I would likely have still supported MOVE politically and worked to help free the MOVE 9, but I wouldn't have been interested in MOVE's belief if I had access to these documents. There have always been whispers about MOVE's position on homosexuality, and they have never fully hidden it. But it has been downplayed and never expressed with anywhere near the force or vitriol as is seen in the section below.

I also have to recognize my own complicity in this matter, because once you get deep enough into MOVE the position on homosexuality becomes obvious, though it was never expressed to me, or any supporters I know of, in the way that it's expressed to MOVE children. For me, all of the things I loved about MOVE were so appealing that as I began to understand uncomfortable things like this I looked the other way. I also assuaged my own conscience by noting that publicly MOVE, and especially Pam Africa, have performed some incredible acts of solidarity with people within LGBTQ movements. This is very true but still doesn't take away from what was being taught to MOVE children, and can never make up for the fact that kids within MOVE grew up believing that if they were gay then they deserved to be killed (listen to this episode for more information on that). There's a lot to process here, and I'll be writing and reflecting on it in more depth very soon.

Statement from Salina Robbins - August 4th, 2021

The following was written by Salina Robbins, known in MOVE as Lina Africa. Salina is the daughter of Whit Simms, the niece of Mike Africa Jr., and the granddaughter of Mike Africa Sr. and Debbie Africa.

It's a real shame to see how some people cling to fame and money, even at the risk of losing their own family. The public figures of the MOVE cult consistently ask what Beth, Maiga, and Kevin's agendas are but refuse to acknowledge their own agendas specifically. With all the allegations, why is it so difficult to stop pushing the agenda which stands with homophobia, sexual abuse, emotional abuse, physical abuse, death threats, the list goes on! If we acknowledge these facts and believe/support survivors, let's account for the entire picture and not just what fits their rhetoric. This moment isn't about the good aspects of MOVE that have been highlighted for so many decades; this moment is FINALLY about acknowledging the bad that was never broadcasted. WHY might public figures of the MOVE cult want to continue to push this narrative!? Could it be for 1.Fame 2.Money 3.Both? Is this what supports their lifestyle? Is it what gives them an identity that makes them feel important? Is this how they provide for themselves? I urge you to ask the question, "WHY?" Without letting them create diversions for you. 1978, 1985, and 2002 were all very real and tragic incidents, but in reality, it doesn't paint the complete picture of what is truly happening here.

Just because your life wasn't bad doesn't give you the right to invalidate someone else's pain and suffering. When you put cute labels on things like black liberation group, unity, political prisoners, revolutionary. I'd like to ask the question; WHAT IS THE REVOLUTION THAT MOVE CLAIMS TO BE WORKING TOWARD!? When have you ever seen or heard MOVE speak about anything other than 1978 or 1985? I was born and raised in the confines of the MOVE cult. There were never discussions about pushing different rhetorics like a raw diet, fighting for political prisoners outside of the MOVE 9/ Mumia, environmental awareness, or even human/animal rights. MOVE's work has always been about promoting MOVE, and claiming that they are working for the common good. This moment is for the individuals who are finally speaking up for themselves and have found the strength to finally realize that their life was not their own. This moment is dedicated to the ones that are fighting to regain their life.
